Rockstar was founded by Russ Weiner in 2001 after quitting his job at Skyy Vodka because the founder Maurice Kanbar (family friend) rejected the idea of an energy drink. To obtain the money for the launch Weiner had to mortgage his California condo for $50,000 at the time.
